Zeigler Auto Group Breaking News: New Maserati Dealership Coming to Grandville!

Zeigler Auto Group LogoThe Zeigler Automotive Group plans to bring Maserati to Michigan.

The Kalamazoo-based car seller was set to announce plans Friday morning to build a 15,000-square-foot facility to house Zeigler Maserati.

The dealership will be adjacent to the Harold Zeigler Chrysler Dodge Jeep business the auto group has at 4200 Parkway Place SW in Grandville, and Zeigler Fiat also there on Parkway Place Drive SW.

Aaron Zeigler, president of the Zeigler Auto Group, would not say how much is being spent to get the business up and going.

“I wanted to do this with Maserati because of the product line-up that is going to be coming up,” Zeigler said. “Having three models in the $60,000 to $90,000 range with the Maserati name and the Ferrari engine is a really powerful combination.”

Known for its many triumphs in Grand Prix-circuit racing since the 1950s, Maserati is associated with high-end sports cars and luxury. That includes the Italian car maker’s Quattroporte, which starts at about $90,000, and its GranTurismo, which sells for $130,000 to $150,000.

But Zeigler said it is working to build its line-up of more affordable cars and is set to introduce:

  • The Maserati Ghibli — A luxury sedan to be launched in the U.S. this year. It showcases Ferrari technology in an all-wheel drive version that is expected to compete with the BMW 5-series and Mercedes E-class.
  • The Maserati Levante — An SUV-based Maserati that is to be launched in 2015. It is tgo be produced in Michigan utilizing Ferrari technology and engineering “and redefine the luxury SUV space,” Zeigler said.

Maserati is owned by Fiat, which is also the parent company of Alfa Romeo and Maserati’s former racing rival Ferrari. Fiat also owns Chrysler LLC.

Zeigler said Ferrari now provides all the engines used in Maseratis.

“They are looking to take their sales from 2,500 in the United States to 25,000 within two years,” Zeigler said. “I really believe in the brand and it’s an exciting brand.”

He said he expects the target customer base for Maserati to be motorists who are already buyers of BMW, Mercedez Benz, Audi and Porsche. The new dealership will be the only Maserati seller outside of the Detroit and Chicago areas and is expected to attract customers from a two-hour driving radius.

“It’s interesting because we’re far enough out of the recession now where the high-end cars are selling really well,” Zeigler said, speaking of cars above $50,000. “I can’t keep cars in the BMW- 7 series and 5 series. They are selling like crazy.”

The new dealership will bring Zeigler Automotive Group holdings to 19 dealerships and 43 franchises in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and New York.

The auto group announced last week that it has acquired a successful BMW franchise in suburban Chicago. It opened on Monday as Zeigler of Orland Park (Ill.). In April, it announced plans to buy a Honda franchise in Amherst, N.Y., and plans to build new facilities for that business.

The new Maserati dealership is expected to employ about 15 workers. They will join about 850 workers the auto group already employs at its various franchises. They include BMW, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Ford, Honda, Jeep and Lincoln.

In Kent County, they include the Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram and Fiat nameplates in Grandville and Zeigler Ford of Lowell. The auto group has is headquarters at 4201 Stadium Drive in Kalamazoo and there sells BMW, Honda, Mitsubishi, Lincoln, Chrysler, Dodge and Ram vehicles.
