Jeep Grand Cherokee keeps trucking

he diesel-engine version of the Grand Cherokee, propelled by a hard working, high mileage, V6 diesel engine that turns the SUV’s wheels with a torque output of 420 pound-feet. Without getting into the college-level physics that defines torque and explains exactly what a pound-foot might be, let’s just say that 420 is a lot. Engine torque is the indicator of how much pulling power the motor possesses. A high rating like the diesel Grand Cherokee’s 420 means it can handle a heavy load. In fact, the diesel-driven Grand Cherokee tows trailer loads as if it is a truck.

But of course, it doesn’t really sound like a giant truck. In terms of sport-utility-vehicle amenities and accommodations, the spacious and sturdy Jeep Grand Cherokee leans well toward the luxurious side. It strives to provide supreme occupant comfort, and that includes insulation from unpleasant noise. Sure, when inside the cabin you detect the familiar rumble and clack of a diesel at work. But it is well muffled and distant, and not at all unpleasant. Just the opposite: the sensation of the diesel engine inside the Jeep Grand Cherokee is really quite pleasant, especially for the sense of assurance it gives you. It’s like the far-off sound and subliminal shake you feel when your furnace fires to warm your home this frosted winter season.

Pulling power is one of two advantages that attracts drivers to the diesel-powered variation of the Grand Cherokee, explained Mo Rochdi, sales manager at Bill DeLuca Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram of Haverhill. The engine’s second major benefit is fuel efficiency, Rochdi said.

“The diesel is not a big proportion of the cars we sell, but there are customers who are looking for the diesel engine for its fuel economy. If they do a lot of driving, it’s definitely worth it,” he explained.
